Bank of China Website Design and Development

Established in 1912, Bank of China is one of the largest banks in the world, with over $3 trillion in assets and a footprint that spans more than 60 countries and regions.

Global Partner in a Complex World

Bank of China USA sought the help of Big Drop to redesign and redevelop its existing website for the United States presence. The goal was to completely overhaul the web presence in order to bring Bank of China USA’s website into a more modern digital age. We provided a fresh new look and feel that would meet or surpass market practice, respond to corporate and retail client needs, and better represent their broad scope of products, services, and global reputation. Another key priority was to update the site to be compliant with WCAG 2.0 AA standards as well as CCPA and GDPR regulations. Lastly, this site was built on a Drupal CMS utilizing the Acquia cloud to meet internal and market requirements and security standards.

In bringing Bank of China USA’s new digital presence to life, Big Drop set out to highlight BOC USA’s robust product and service offerings within the categories of Personal Banking, Corporate Banking, Financial Institutions, and RMB Internationalization. Big Drop sought to create a design that would honor the bank’s rich history, while also appealing to an increasingly digital-savvy cohort. The mobile-responsive site was optimized to make information easily accessible; presenting content in a way that encourages discovery, interest, consideration, and conversion.

In order to create user journeys conducive to information discovery, we implemented an information architecture strategy that conveyed both the rich company history and the product offerings in a clear, digestible manner. BOC USA offers a plethora of banking products across Personal, Corporate, and Institutional categories. In order to present this information in a way that would not cause cognitive overload for users, Big Drop curated a highly customized navigation and sub-navigation experience, which presents products based on the clients’ first navigational click. This approach worked extremely well as the target audiences for each category do not overlap in a tangible way.

After implementing an information architecture strategy that would create a clean foundation for content, we then focused on creating dynamic custom design to remain visually engaging and exciting for BOC USA stakeholders. Through the use of iconography and other multimedia elements, we were able to break up text and keep users engaged, informed, and on the site longer. It is also important to note that the image choice on this site is highly curated, as each department within Bank of China USA had a final say in which pictures were used and where. The cooperation and engagement between Big Drop and BOC USA was critical not only in various areas of design and technical implementation, but also recognizing the cultural sensitivities between the two largest economies in the world, one of which has 5000 years of culture behind it, was critical to our success.

When focusing on brand awareness and product information, a primary objective for Bank of China USA was to create a user experience that clearly articulates capabilities to key audience members in an intuitive manner. Through the extensive design refresh, Big Drop was able to articulate a sense of brand credibility and excitement to audience members, keeping users engaged as they are pathed towards each department’s respective contact information.

Through this engagement, Big Drop was able to provide Bank of China USA with a robust digital presence that functioned as a vehicle for clear communication of the Bank of China brand. Through purposeful content usage, user-centric navigational choices, and the optimization of best-in-class technology; Big Drop created a digital experience for Bank of China USA that will serve it for many years to come.
